Guest Network is a wireless router security feature that allows homes and offices to set up a secondary network (within the same router) for “foreign” users and devices you don’t yet trust. These “outside” devices may belong to a guest visiting your home or hotel. Owners may configure/limit the type of information that foreign users can access when they connect to a network.

How to Configure Guest Wifi

  1. Guest Wifi management is more straightforward than it appears. For starters, there’s no need to run an additional cable or pay your ISP twice. Your Wifi router will certainly allow you to set up an alternative network for guests; simply go into the settings and enable it. Next, enter your router’s IP address in the URL bar of your browser (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, but not necessarily). The address should be in the user manual for the router.
  2. Depending on the brand and model of your router, you should notice a “Guest network” option in the admin panel. The feature is known as “Guest Zone” or “Guest Access” on various routers.
  3. If not, look under the Wireless (WLAN) section. If you still cannot find the option, consult the router’s manual or the manufacturer’s website, or conduct a Google search for how to enable the Guest network on your router’s model.
  4. Because guest networks are typically disabled by default on routers, you must enable them or tick the appropriate box to activate the feature.
  5. Configure the characteristics of the Guest network, including the SSID and password.
  6. Next, adjust various security settings such as SSID Broadcast (allow this if you want to mask the name of your network), the encryption type (WEP, WPA2, or WPA3), and so on.
  7. The most basic setting, however, is where you specify which resources your guests can access. Check that the settings that say “Allow guests to see each other and access my local network” or “Allow access to Settings” or “Allow guests to access local network resources” or anything else similar is unchecked.
  8. This is done to ensure that devices on the guest network can only use the router’s internet connection and nothing else – the entire purpose of a guest network.
  9. Once you’ve unchecked the option above, you can save the configuration and establish the Guest network.
